Built in 1888 by the British as a wet market, Central Market has undergone extensive refurbishments and it has become a landmark for Malaysian culture and heritage.
I can't remember the last time I went to Central Market. About one month ago, we visited Central Market and just to see how much things have changed over the years!
#1
One of the most obvious additions is the Kasturi Walk, located next to Central Market. They built a covered roof over the various kiosks that sell food and souvenirs over the sidewalk, and gave it a local touch with giant wau bulan structures located at both ends.

#3 Food Stall
#4 Fruits Stall
#5 A stall offers sea coconuts.

#7 I had a large cup of the sea coconut water to quench my thirst. It was natural with great health benefits!
#8 Lezzetto ice-cream stall offers Turkish ice creams.

#11 Indigenous Handicrafts
#12 Fashion Accessories
#13 Colorful Necklaces
#14 Fruit Fork Sets
#15 Within Central Market itself (fully air-conditioned), where tourists can purchase unique souvenirs and traditional handicrafts, it looks as though not much has changed.
#16
But Central Market has created a corner to display multi ethnicity and zoned the stalls based on the features of each race, with handicrafts from specific cultures organized into ‘streets’ such as Malay Street, Straits Chinese, Lorong India, Jonker Street and Blue Mansion.
The purpose of this new zone is to let the tourists have an insight of the cultural difference of the various races in Malaysia.

A visit to Central Market is definitely a worthwhile and an enriching experience. Tourists get to immerse themselves in the rich Malaysian culture, pick up souvenirs, and buy unique arts and crafts to bring home a bit of Malaysia!
